8th Review: Erykah Badu-Baduizm

On February 11, 1997, 21 years ago Erykah Badu fcreated an album that became the essential go to neo soul album of the 1990s. This album was called “Baduizm,” and was very highly acclaimed when it was initially released, earning Ms. Badu a 3X platinum certification. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, Badu can be compared to other artists like D’Angelo, Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, Thundercat, and Portishead. In 1998 Baduizm received 14 Grammy nominations and won 8 of them, for the categories such as Best R&B album, Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist, Best Female R&B Performance for “On & On,” etc.

Baduizm features contributions from The Roots, Ron Carter, and samples of songs from Curtis Mayfield and Atlantic Starr. Some of my favorite tracks off this record are “On & On,” “Apple Tree,” “Other Side of the Game,” and “Next Lifetime.” Erykah Badu really fleshed out some remarkable tracks filled with soulful, jazzy grooves on this album.

I would give this album a 10 out of 10 rating for its impeccable tracks from start to finish, and its smooth R&B jams. It is definitely a classic album to add to your collection if you are not already familiar with it.

Once again, thanks to all my fabulous readers! I appreciate each and every one of you!
