Little Dragon–Little Dragon (2007)

In 2007, just over a decade ago, the Swedish electronic band Little Dragon released their eponymous debut album on Village Again Records. What makes Little Dragon’s initial release so outstanding is its great tracks with songs like “Twice,” “Constant Surprises,” “Recommendation,” and “Turn Left.” It’s the kind of album I would want to listen to on a rainy day or meditating in a blissful-zen state.

In 2007, just over a decade ago, the Swedish electronic band Little Dragon released their eponymous debut album on Village Again Records. The lead singer and songwriter, Yukimi Nagano, is a Japanese-Swedish musician who has performed with artists such as Gorillaz, Koop, and Raphael Saadiq, and José González. Her style of singing is definitely influenced by artists such as Billie Holiday, Etta James, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Lena Horne.  Some artists that sound like the band Little Dragon are BadBadNotGood, Koop, Flying Lotus, Zero 7, and Thievery Corporation.

What makes Little Dragon’s initial release so outstanding is its great tracks with songs like “Twice,” “Constant Surprises,” “Recommendation,” and “Turn Left.” It’s the kind of album I would want to listen to on a rainy day or meditating in a blissful-zen state. I would decribe the band’s music as a mixed bag of neo-soul, jazz, trip hop, and electronic jumbled together to form a cohesive grooving sound.

I recently got to see Little Dragon live in Berkeley, CA, sharing the same bill with BadBadNotGood and Flying Lotus. It was a fantastic performance by all three bands, but Little Dragon definitely stole the show. They were such lively performers with an enormous stage presence that made the audience erupt with emphatic energy. The band even unplugged their instruments for a handful of songs, and gathered around one mic armed with an acoustic guitar, accordian, shakers/tambourine, and an acoustic bass guitar. It was cool to seem them perform new songs and older songs from their first two albums.

All in all, Little Dragon is a band that is not as big as they should be. If you are into jazz, electronic, or neo-soul music, then make sure to play some Little Dragon when you are streaming or listening to music in any setting. I want to thank all my readers! I appreciate each and every one of y’all!

Thanks so much!
