Daniel Caesar–Freudian (2017)

Last year one of my favorite albums that was independently released was Daniel Caesar’s Freudian. The Canadian R&B/Soul artist received a Grammy nomination for “Best R&B Album” in 2017 for his quiet-storm, gospel-inspired first full length LP. Freudian is a record filled with love songs, psychological reckonings, existential crises, and emotional epiphanies.

Last year one of my favorite albums that was independently released was Daniel Caesar’s Freudian. The Canadian R&B/Soul artist received a Grammy nomination for “Best R&B Album” in 2017 for his quiet-storm, gospel-inspired first full length LP. The album features appearances from Kali Uchis, H.E.R., Syd, BadBadNotGood, Charlotte Day Wilson. It also contains gospel samples from Kirk Franklin and Donnie McClurkin. Also, Daniel Caesar said “unrequited love and religion play a larger role in his music.” Similar musical artists that sound like Caesar are Little Dragon, Lalah Hathaway, Moses Sumney, Bilal, Leon Bridges, and Khalid.

Freudian is a record filled with love songs, psychological reckonings, existential crises, and emotional epiphanies. All the female guest vocalists Caesar chose to accompany him on this album provide a harmonic blanket of comfort establishing a sonic serenity that soothes all who listen. A few of my favorite tracks off this record are “Get You (feat. Kali Uchis),” “Best Part (featuring H.E.R.),” “We Find Love,” and “Take Me Away (feat. Syd).”

Anyone who appreciates innovative new neo-soul and r&b/soul music will definitely be into this album. It’s a great lazy Sunday morning coffee time album, or a winding-down electric relaxation album. I want to thank all my readers for taking the time to read these music reviews!

Thanks!
